A BIT ABOUT THE ISLAND
The trip to Amherst Island begins with a 20-minute ferry ride
across Lake Ontario from Millhaven to Stella. For many first-time
visitors this is a highlight of the trip. The island is a tranquil
rural spot with a population of roughly 400. Within the town of
Stella you can find a general store, post office, take-out restaurant,
tea house and fine arts and handicraft gallery.
On the Island the recreational possibilities are endless. Walk
or cycle the back roads, seeking out Island landmarks such as
the Fishing Village, the Owl Woods or the Crank Handle. Go bird
watching in the bird sanctuary maintained by the Kingston Field
Naturalists. Swim at one of three public beaches or hit the water
for some fishing, sailing or scuba diving or boating. Attend one
of the three Island churches (Anglican, Catholic or Presbyterian).
Or relax and do nothing.

the Amherst Island website to learn more. |
